City relief

The contrast in today's Rioni Campitelli and Monti is clearly evident: Dense, urban tissue in the northeast (Monti), fragmented city blocks from bygone eras with topographical edges between Piazza Venezia (north-west corner), Palatine (south edge) and Colosseum (south-east corner). At this special point, the urban structure that has been typical of Rome since antiquity gives way to a wide, park-like
landscape
of ruins, pine trees and isolated set pieces from post-antique years, that stand alone like lighthouses reminiscent of bygone times.
